What is the Mikono Association Inc and who runs it?

This project was initiated by a group of health professionals from Western Australia with a desire to improve the health of developing nations. We aim to do this by providing some financial assistance in the form of grants to fund the training of health professionals.

Currently this project is in its in infancy and we are recruiting more people interested in donating on an annual basis (>$200 per year) for a minimum of three years - fulfilling these criteria gives a person membership of the Association, with the right to attend any meetings of the Association, including the Annual General Meeting at which recipients of grants will be decided.  Donors can register their interest on this website and join our mailing list in order to receive updates via email. . The management committee is comprised of Dr May Sian Oh and Dr Tina Bertilone, who are responsible for the administration of the Association, with plans to possibly expand in the future depending on the size of membership.

We are aiming to collect a minimum of $10,000 per year to be distributed as grants. Note that donations made are not tax deductible. All money collected will be donated as grants and a minimal amount will be spent on administration. This project is run entirely by volunteers.

Applicants for these grants must reside in Kenya,  be part of a disadvantaged group, and fulfill other criteria see information for grant applicants. Additionally, a pledge of good faith must be made, so that the recipient agrees to stay in their area of need for a minimum of 2 years, and if they move elsewhere to contribute back to the Association, financially or otherwise. From early 2009 we will have a Local Officer residing in Kenya, and at this time we will begin to set up partnerships with health clinics and hospitals in areas of disadvantage.

An annual financial summary will be available for all donors to show accountability for our financial distributions.

Additionally we aim to post on our website the progress of the benefactors of these grants and the ways in which we have helped them.
